About me

My name is Elza Bogos, a mother of three children.

I got to know the mosaic technique six years ago when I happened to drop in a small mosaic studio in Jaffa during one of my trips, which offered an inspiring sight. Mirrors, vases, bowls, one more beautiful than the other, all with glass mosaic decoration, and pictures made of stone mosaic. The artist was working at the back of the tiny studio and offered his works to the interested visitors.

After my return home I started studying the mosaic technique. First I showed my works to my family only, then to my close friends, and later, encouraged by my success, I entered an amateur craftsman competition, where I was awarded a first prize.

Having learnt about several other materials, now I work with glass, stone and smalti as well.

Since then, I have been looking for the local works of mosaic art during my journeys, which luckily cannot only be found in churches today. Mosaics are experiencing a new renaissance in several countries of Europe, and especially in America. Numerous public buildings, public places have mosaic decorations, and mosaic works of art or mosaic floors, wall pictures, and portraits can be seen in more and more flats, houses nowadays.

I completed a course in the mosaic factory of the Orsoni family in Venice in May this year, where I have familiarised myself with several new materials and techniques.

In addition to a pleasant pastime and a means of self expression, working with mosaics also means to me that I prefer to see unique objects around me that are made using high standard materials and sparing neither time nor effort rather than ones that are dumped on the market by furniture shops in the form of mass produced and uniform ornaments. My objective with this introduction is to familiarise others with this beautiful branch of art and technique as well. My dream is that perhaps one day I will also work and receive visitors in my own mosaic studio.
